About UWE Students' Union

Essentially UWE Students' Union (UWESU), is an organisation of students, for students.

Introduction to UWE Students’ Union

The University of the West of England is one of the country’s most popular higher education institutions and has an excellent reputation for both teaching and research. The ten faculties and Hartpury College cover a wide range of academic disciplines, and the University has a close relationship with a number of regional colleges. More than 28,000 students follow some 300 degree programs studying both full-time and part-time.

Essentially UWE Students’ Union (UWESU), is an organisation of students, for students. It is an independent, democratic organisation that’s key purpose is to enhance the educational experience, serve and represent its members. The Union operates on five campuses in Bristol; Frenchay, St Matthias, Bower Ashton and Glenside and at Hartpury in Gloucestershire.
UWESU is a campaigning organisation, a key activity of which is the representation of it’s members. Elected student sabbatical officers and other student representatives sit on a range of University committees, including the University Board of Governors and the Academic Board.

As an independent, representative organisation UWESU recognises that the staff are its most valuable asset. We value people who think for themselves, who seek responsibility and seize the opportunities offered by a challenging environment. We aim to provide opportunities for all staff to feel valued and to realise their full potential.

Working at UWESU offers the opportunity to work in an informal, forward-thinking environment. We offer all staff a generous package including:

  • Over 30 days annual holiday entitlement
  • Membership of a service related sick pay scheme
  • Occupational pension
  • Flexible working arrangements (where possible)

UWESU is committed to the principle of equality of opportunity, which governs our employment practices. An essential requirement of all staff is understanding and commitment to that principle.

UWESU operates a range of welfare, advice and support services via its independent Advice Centre and site offices. In addition, the Union operates a 20 place nursery at the St. Matthias Campus during tem-time. The Sports and Societies Union (SASU) currently supports around 80 clubs and societies ranging from cultural, political & course related societies, clubs which practice team sports, outdoor pursuits & martial arts, to name but a few. In total the SASU currently has some 6,000 members. UWESU publishes a regular free student newspaper, Western Eye and a magazine. Opportunities exist for students to get involved in the production of both publications as part of the Union’s Media Production Team, which also includes design and internet opportunities.

Job opportunities for students within UWESU are handled through its Jobshop. The Jobshop also exists to assist students in finding part-time and vacation work with both local and national employers and also provides advice on a wide range of employment issues. Resources are also applied to encouraging and facilitating student involvement in volunteer projects and the local community including RAG.

UWESU runs bars and shops on the Frenchay, St Matthias, Glenside and Bower Ashton sites and provides a diverse entertainments program. UWESU is also responsible for a whole host of other facilities, including launderette, snooker & pool tables, the student centre, print shop and common rooms to name but a few.
