UWE Students' Union - enhancing the student experience - www.uwesu.org

My blog section contains my latest posts and updates on what I've been working on, for you, as Sports President.

Blog

Welcome to my Blog. Summer has been very strange around the Students’ Union without any students… a little quieter! All the work I’ve been doing will be revealed in my Sports President report of which will be online (in the Sports Council section). So for now I’ll say – enjoy the rest of the ‘summer’ and I’ll see you at the welcome talks, Fresher’s week – and hopefully throughout the year at the Varsity Series, Committee Training, Sports Awards Dinner, BUCS competitions and so on…

Cheers

Rock and Roll

Ooh week number 5 of term.

I hope everyone’s having a ball so far! (Excuse the sports pun… ha ha)

So the last month as always has been pretty hectic… The Sports and Activities Centre has had plenty of students lining up to join the Sports clubs, find out more about what we’re offering and last but not least – to see if we really are as good looking as the pictures… On a more serious note, the Sports Exec and I have been throwing ourselves in to a number of different projects. The first Varsity meeting was held with over 10 clubs wanting to take part and coming up with a number of wacky ideas to promote the series. The events team are taking over the UWEdnesday and spicing up the Sports Awards Dinner – although it’s all a bit secret at the moment ;) The Sports council passed a motion to run a consultation for a swimming pool, so get your swimming hats and beach wear out and join us in making a scene… more details to come! The first Disabled Students Group was brilliant, all who attended have real enthusiasm and I’m sure they will be the driving force behind many good changes in UWE. The SU’s collated student feedback on the safety at St. Matt’s and Glenside has made its way into an important University report and as a result changes are to be made on both campuses – so watch the space! J. I’ve had a trip to Exeter to represent the University on a regional Sporting level, and chair the beginnings of a regional strategy for University Sports in the Southwest. As elected South West Chair I took a trip to London for another meeting but this time on a national level where we discussed the direction of the British University and College Sport (it used to be BUSA)

So it’s all rock and roll in the Sporting World!

Swimming Pool!

Well... what a busy term so far! It seems that committee training paid off as I'm sure there are many more people up in the activities centre planning loads of new things! Awesome. We had a very successful disabled students group on Thursday just gone, and now we're planning fortnightly meetings - we'll keep you updated on the progress. If you're interested please give me an email and I'll let you know more details. The first Varsity Series Meeting has happened and we've at least 10 clubs on board. Woo hoo! Get practicing that chanting!! We've had some packed UWEdnesday nights and now an Events team who are going to push it forward. Ultimate Frisbee are taking over the night this week. Not forgetting the very first sports council, we had a motion passed; a consultation around the plans for the 1st UWE Swimming pool. Wicked! We're planning a day of action - (get your swim wear out) and a mass consultation to make sure students have a say! Check out the next Westerneye and I'll keep putting up posts here! Have fun... see you soon. Lily

Hello again

Hello again,

This was my October article for Westerneye... thought I'd create a blog out of it...

Well it’s the morning after the Super Hero RAG bar crawl – what a great night! Although I still don’t understand why one of the RAG chairs was dressed up as Tina Turner – when did she save the world?? It’s been manic up on the 5th Floor of the Student’s Union. We started off the year with 3 days of Exec and committee training. We then moved on to induction talks to as many of the Fresher’s as we could in the big marquee talks! We played the U – WE/ U – WE/ U – WE game. Remember? Thank you for not booing me off, I was just training you all up for the Varsity series. Then there were the Fresher’s Fairs at all campuses finishing with the massive Frenchay Sports and Societies Fresher’s Fair. The demonstrations were pretty cool with Trampolining close to jumping through the Marquee roof, Tae Kwon Do breaking breeze blocks with their fists and dance getting volunteers up to have a wiggle (me included). Putting Fresher’s aside, the other stuff we’ve been working on includes the promotion of the disabled student’s group – we’ve had plenty of interest and a first meeting booked. If you’re interested, please give me an email and come along – or write on our forum! We’ve got Intramural coming up too, this year we’ve managed to run it at a much cheaper price -£22.50!! Check it out on the website or ask for more info at any Students’ Union office. You may have seen some Varsity posters flying about ‘who said it’s the taking part that counts – embrace the rivalry’ we’re working on developing the Varsity series to more Sports. So look out for more information and remember the U-WE chant and we’ll all do UWE proud!! Last but not least, the UWEdnesday launch night will have already happened by the time this gets read – but UWEdnesday happens every Wednesday, 10pm – 3am! Come along!

Enjoy the first term!

Welcome all!

Hello to all new students at UWE! This is my 2nd year of being the Sports President here at the Students’ Union, so hopefully I’ve picked up a fair bit of knowledge since I finished my Drama degree last in 07. Being a drama girl does mean that when I get the chance to do a bit of public speaking, I completely milk the limelight (so apologies in advance, if you have to experience it).

This year I am planning to facilitate some student led groups such as the disabled students group, and a self awareness/defence day with our combat sports clubs.

Being part of a club opens up many opportunities for a small price. You'll meet plenty of friends, you’ll have the chance to represent the University in Competitions, (which in the past have led to national and even international success - Pete Reed part of the Olympic gold coxless 4!). You'll also have the chance to become part of a club committee; this will not only aid your personal development but also enrich your CV! It’s easy to get involved in a club and if you’re not sure – just give me an email!

Have a fab time at UWE and get involved in plenty so you get the most out of your University Experience!

Cheers all!!

Lily
